Sometimes it was too much as in the G major Prelude where gesture swallowed up the music entirely. In the final D minor Prelude it was a marvel turning a small piece into a mighty expression of steely tragedy. In these little masterworks something only glimpsed before really stood out: Goerner’s ability to set a melody in relief by slightly anticipating the beat. It was a wonderful evening in many ways but it would be good to see how Goerner handles music that relies less on colour and gesture.
