But improvements have to be paid for. “The biggest issue is affordability” says Mercer. “Prices have risen by 27 per cent above inflation in the last decade and the average annual room rent of £5224 represents around 95 per cent of the maximum available student loan. This is significant because the more students have to pay for accommodation — and the more time they have to spend earning money — the greater the impact on their studies and the likelihood of them dropping out.”
