</a> Nowadays it is the poacher not the ‘sportsman’ who has the intricately patterned heads of tigers in his gun sights. And it is the job of Diwakar Chapagain the WWF’s anti-poaching officer in Nepal (his official title is program coordinator for wildlife trade monitoring) to stop him. The biggest haul of recent times Chapagain told me came in January of this year when a minivan was stopped randomly at a police checkpoint in Kakani 15 miles north-west of Kathmandu in the direction of the border with Tibet. In the back were sacks of rice and hidden in them police found five tiger skins and seven sets of tiger bones including skulls. This consignment was bound for China where the skins have traditionally been used in ceremonial clothing in Tibet and increasingly are coveted as a status symbol by China’s burgeoning middle class. The bones and body parts are used in traditional medicine in tonic wine as an aphrodisiac and so on (with absolutely no beneficial effects – a murderous irony).
