It’s set in rural-industrial England in 1833 and is based on the real-life story of the workers at Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire. “It tells the story of the young people who worked there” explains Kevin McNally who plays Mr Timperley the stern manager of the apprentice house. “They worked from the age of nine until 21 they worked six days a week in the mill and on Sunday it was church followed by lessons all day so it was pretty arduous.” From the outset we’re made aware of the physical danger that surrounded the young lives when a shocking accident in the factory brings home the dangers of working with unfenced machinery.
